The Storm

“Stand on your own two feet, leaf in the wind, and defy the storm.”

A character from one of my writing projects, depicted in a moment of defiance. I chose cool, fairly low – saturation colors to give the painting a solemn quality, which combines with the frantic imagery of the scene to create a serious yet exciting image. There is also an intentional element of mystery to the image, with the nature of the storm and the event the character is reacting to being hidden.

In terms of rendering, this painting was an entertaining exercise in rendering vastly different materials. It depicts leather, cloth, clouds, and steel, among other materials. The portrayed character’s steel mask was a particular challenge, both design and rendering wise.
