Discordant Depths

“When one is told he must go East, West, North, and South, where does he turn?”
I made this painting during a period of intense reevaluation. Frustrated by others trying to dictate my life path, sometimes urging me to go in opposite directions, I decided to express my anxiety through artwork.
The lighting for this scene was an interesting challenge. It’s an unusual setup: backlit fog, in a cave. I had to figure out how I would draw attention to details in the foreground, while implementing the scenery I wanted. I ended up going with a fairly traditional lighting setup for the front of the cave, and combined it with the ethereal back lit fog. Enjoy!
